This is part of a continuing refutation of an older (and idiotic) Salon article which can be read here.
4. Capitalist governments don’t commit human rights atrocities.
The author of this article makes an incredible error here. They think “Ah ha! Look, governments with more economic freedoms, like the United States, commit human rights atrocities too!” They do in fact make a valid point. Barack Obama (a president this author would probably defend) has launched 390 drone strikes in the last 5 years racking up a kill count greater than 2,400 people with many of these being civilians (including women and children).1
The blind worship of government has clouded the real truth of their claim. That truth being that governments commit atrocious crimes due to their monopolistic powers. Governments, or more specifically, the individuals in charge of “governments” kill people. The common thread of truth throughout the author’s rants is that governments of any type engage in reckless abandon when it comes to murder.
One simply has to look at the amount of death that has occurred at the hands of government to know the truth of this claim. 262,000,000 people have died by the hands of government in the last century. That is enough bodies to circle the earth 10 times.2 That is an incredible amount of death at the hands of “social engineers”. I have no doubt that the author is very much stuck in the left vs. right mindset. So I’m sure it has never occurred to them that the common denominator in these violent acts is government, the central monopolistic institution on violence and coercion.
It is lastly interesting to see how the author proves this point if you go back to the first point in their article. They claim that communist regimes are not the only ones to rely on violence in enforcing their edicts. Well… Duh! Coercion and violence is the sole apparatus of the state used in enforcing its will on others. It is the trademark tool of all governments whether they are democracies, republics, dictatorships or whatever.
My suggestion? Lets abolish the common denominator in all of this ugly business, government.Serle, Jack. “More than 2,400 Dead as Obama’s Drone Campaign Marks Five Years | The Bureau of Investigative Journalism.” The Bureau of Investigative Journalism.
